The History of 93.1 FM in Cebu

93.1 FM is a radio frequency that has been used by various radio stations in Cebu City, Philippines, since 1976. It has undergone several changes in ownership, branding, format, and call letters over the years. Here is a brief overview of the history of 93.1 FM in Cebu.

LA 93.1 (1976-1992)

The station was inaugurated by Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation on May 1, 1976, under the call letters DYLA-FM. At that time, it carried the branding as LA 93.1 with its slogan Your Lovely Alternative, airing a easy listening format. It catered to the upscale and mature listeners who preferred soft and relaxing music.

Smash FM 93.1 (1992-1997, 2003-2009, 2013-2023)

In 1992, the station changed its call letters to DYWF and rebranded as Smash FM 93.1, aired a Modern Rock format. It targeted the younger and more adventurous audience who enjoyed rock and alternative music. It featured local and foreign bands and artists, as well as live performances and events.

In September 1997, Mareco Broadcasting Network acquired the station’s airtime lease and relaunched it as 93.1 Crossover with a Smooth AC format. At the time MBNI took operations, Crossover went on the air on 93.1 FM. Crossover was a network of radio stations that played smooth jazz, R&B, soul, and adult contemporary music. It aimed to appeal to the sophisticated and discerning listeners who appreciated quality music.

In 2003, Vimcontu Broadcasting Corporation took full control of the station and renamed the station back to Smash FM 93.1 with the same format. Meanwhile, Crossover moved to the then-newly acquired 90.7 FM, which was formerly owned by UBSI.

On September 1, 2009, Smash FM 93.1 was officially rebranded as Club Radio 93.1, becoming the city’s first and only FM radio station playing an all-dance format. It played the latest and hottest dance hits, as well as remixes and club anthems. It catered to the party-goers and clubbers who loved to groove and have fun.

In February 2013, the station rebranded back to Smash FM and switched to a mass-based format. It played a variety of music genres, such as pop, rock, OPM, novelty, and more. It also featured news, entertainment, and public service programs. It aimed to reach a wider and more diverse audience.

On July 27, 2013, Brigada Mass Media Corporation, owner of Brigada Newspaper & its flagship station in General Santos, took over the station’s operations and relaunched the station as 93.1 Brigada News FM under the helm of former RMN Cebu and DYKC radio announcer, station manager of the station, current Area Manager for Visayas and founder of ANAKK Inc., Raul del Prado. It was formally launched on October 1, 2013. Brigada News FM was a network of radio stations that focused on delivering news, information, and commentary. It also played music, mostly OPM and classic hits. It aimed to inform, educate, and empower the listeners.

In August 2022, the station transferred its transmitter site from Winland Tower Condominium along Juana Osmeña Ext. to Mt. Busay for better reception.

In May 2023, two months before the expiration of Brigada’s lease with this frequency, Brigada News FM Cebu transferred to Mareco Broadcasting Network-owned 90.7 FM, following the transfer of its broadcast facilities to Uptown Residences in Brgy. Guadalupe. From May 15 to June 17, 90.7 FM simulcasted this frequency during the afternoon and overnight shifts.

On June 18, 2023, after Brigada News FM Cebu shifted its full-time operations to 90.7 FM, this frequency was downgraded to a repeater of the latter until August 14, 2023, when it went off the air.
