This month’s issue of RAPMAG (Radio And Production Magazine www.rapgmag.com) continued its topic on why producers still have not made the switch to Pro Tools.

My entry made it and found out that I had the same concerns and reasons with other producers around the world.

I do have Pro Tools on my workstation. But I have a few reasons why I have never completed the switch.

First the transition phase is time consuming, second, no one is willing to teach, and besides my Adobe Audition has given me the right results.

While Pro Tools is often called the “industry standard”, programs like Cool Edit and SAW are referred to as “industry indispensables”.

Based on my observation, here are some major reasons why most radio producers have not made the switch.

1. Pro Tools employ complex processes for simple tasks like voice editing compared to non PT softwares
2. Pro Tools requires a new hardware, new operating system, and new softwares/plugins
3. Pro Tools requires more time to learn the software
4. Producers have been comfortable with their DAWs that offer other features like video editing
5. Pro Tools multi-workstation licensing proved to be expensive when used for teaching in colleges.
6. Many finds Pro Tools real-time rendering time consuming
7. Many features have already existed in older versions of non-PT softwares before being made available on newer versions of Pro Tools.
8. Some programs like SAW proved to be fast in processing/editting long-form syndicated broadcasted content than PT.
9. While Pro Tools is often called the “industry standard”, programs like Cool Edit and SAW are referred to as “industry indispensables”.
10. Because producers insist that it is not the software that matters, it is the producer.
